Students of the Faculty of Law visited the IMC

The Independent Media Commission (IMC), on January 26, 2024, hosted a group of law students from the Faculty of Law, as part of a study visit organized by the Kosovo Institute for Law (IKD).
In the introductory speech, the Chairman of the IMC, Mr. Jeton Mehmeti has presented a brief summary about the IMC as a media regulator, organization, mandate and legal powers. In the following, the Chairman Mr. Mehmeti presented in detail the operation and role of the IMC, the work procedures, the licensing procedures of media and distribution operators, the monitoring of licensees regarding the implementation of legal obligations from the IMC legislation, as and the legal measures taken by the IMC in those cases where it turns out that the licensees are found to be in violation of the legislation.
After the part of the presentations, the meeting continued with the question and answer session where the officials of the IMC answered the various questions that the students had, about the issues related to the regulation of licensees, the procedures and criteria of media licensing, the monitoring of program contents by the IMC in the implementation of the law and IMC regulations. There was also a special interest from the students for the licensing process in the IMC, the decision-making process in legal cases, the respect of the Code of Ethics by the media, the initiation procedure and the handling of complaints. Then the initiation of ex officio cases was discussed according to the findings from media monitoring, the most frequent types of complaints that the parties and the public direct to the IMC, the current programming schemes that are being broadcast, with a focus on "reality show" content as well as other shows. live in the format of televised debates.
This visit was a continuation of other meetings and cooperation of the IMC with institutions, organizations and students, in order to promote the ethical standards of journalism, increase the quality of reporting in the media, protect the public interest and media education.
