The Independent Media Commission (IMC) held a meeting today with representatives of organizations of persons with disabilities - DPOs: HANDIKOS, the Association of the Blind, the Kosovo Forum on Disability and Down Syndrome, in order to discuss the non-use of the right to terminology for people with disabilities in the Kosovo media.
Given that the appropriate term is' disability ', as defined in both the Constitution of Kosovo and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, many journalists and the media mistakenly label individuals in this community as' persons with disabilities, disabilities, special needs, etc. '.
As a result, organizations of persons with disabilities, on the recommendation of the IMC, agreed to henceforth file complaints to this body in cases where they encounter that certain audio-visual media have used the wrong terms for persons with disabilities. limited.
Chief Executive Officer of the IMC, Mr. Faruk Rexhaj said that based on the proclamation of the Year 2022 - Year of Persons with Disabilities and since the Law on the Independent Media Commission is under review, they will try to have some provisions regarding persons with disabilities. disability.
In the end, the parties agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding soon, for greater cooperation and awareness for this purpose.
